For over 35 years, this parish undertakes a process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). It is a process for adults who desire to become Catholic as well as for Baptized Christians seeking the same. However, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has changed the name, reorienting the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) into the new Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).
The new structure is meant to invite candidates and catechumens into a continuous process of spiritual formation as opposed to fixed checkpoints on the path to baptism, first Communion and confirmation. As candidate or catechumen you will learn that the rites received in church or at the parish are just one part of the ongoing journey does not just culminate with baptism and confirmation, but will continue throughout your lives.
The process takes over several months and begins in September. There are weekly gatherings where people come together to share, grow, and understand the Catholic faith. It is a preparation process for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion) at the Easter Vigil in the spring. The process is also open to Baptized Catholics who need to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion. These are not classes but a faith-sharing group.
If you or anyone you know who might be interested in this process, please contact Linda Metz lmetz32447@aol.com or the parish office (732-721-2772 or stbernsecy@gmail.com) and leave a name and a phone number and a good time to call. Someone will follow-up with a phone call to answer any other questions one may have. Come and See!
