Welcome to St. Bernadette Church's Pre-Cana Class
First off, congratulations on being engaged!!! This is such an exciting time for you both. You have probably already talked to your priest or deacon and they told you that you needed to take a Pre-Cana class. But what exactly is a Pre-Cana class?
What is Pre-Cana?
Simply put, Pre-Cana is a marriage preparation course, class, or consultation for couples who will be married in a Catholic Church. You may not know this, but the first miracle Jesus performed actually happened at a wedding. Cana was the town where the wedding was celebrated, and Jesus, his mother, and his friends were guests. This is where the word Cana comes from the town where Jesus performed his first miracle. For this reason, the preparation offered by the Church to engaged couples is called Pre-Cana. In other words, “before the wedding.”
Why do we have to attend Marriage Preparation Sessions (Pre-Cana)?
The Church wants your relationship and marriage to be successful and to be a source of happiness and blessing throughout your lives. These sessions will present the essential Christian and human aspects of marriage so that you may come to a deeper understanding of all the dimensions of the marriage covenant. They will provide you with concrete means to reflect on your relationship in light of the factors and issues that are usually involved in marriage.
What Happens During Pre-Cana?
In a Pre-Cana class, you will prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage. Couples will have the opportunity to discuss many important topics, including Family of Origin, Spirituality of Marriage, Money Matters, Conflict Resolution, Intimacy and Sexuality, Theology of Marriage, and more. It’s important that you reflect with openness and honesty about these topics and share your reflections with your fiancé.
When should I register for Marriage Preparation Sessions?
Your preparation for marriage will begin when you announce your engagement, even if that is a year or more before your proposed wedding date. It is strongly recommended that you register as soon as possible. Sessions can begin to fill up three to six months in advance.
How do I register?
You can email our Pre-Cana leader and she will get back to you as soon as possible.
